Five Easy Pieces: Winter 2010

If you haven't been outside lately, let me be the first to tell you that it's gotten nasty already this winter. Like many guys, you might have waited until after Christmas to get your clothes this season. Well BBG's scouted the whole scene out for you and has some suggestions for your non-office time attire this winter. So without further ado, Winter 2010's Five Easy Pieces.

Pea Coat: The pea coat has returned as a bad weather option for casual wear. I love mine. Double-breasted style and the high collar keep the body warm, with a trim fit that's modern. It has the classic military background that frequently defines men's fashion, with a practical application and details. This Ralph Lauren number answers the call at $299; BGSD has one that gets you there at more discreet $80; or you can go straight to the source for an Alpha Industries US Navy Pea Coat (w/10 buttons), $104.

Winter Boots: No, not the typical ankle boot or suede boot we usually toss out, but an honest-to-goodness bad weather boot that staves off snow, cold, damp, and other foulness. Given areas around the country have already seen feet of snow, it seems like a good investment. One option is the Timberland Tackhead, a tall boot with a stylish canvas and leather design, Vibram sole, and Timberland construction, $295; or for a more athletic looking boot, the North Face Chillkat are waterproof and cold resistant up to -25°F, $90.

Flannel Shirt: No you're not having flashbacks of the Seattle grunge scene circa '92, they’re back better than ever. Get past the lumberjack analogies and recognize the benefits during these cold weather months. A flannel shirt provides a level of warmth and comfort that a sweater or regular cotton shirt can’t. Now with more body-conscious styling, it’s sharp and functional. Try a Dunderdon Fellows trim-cut flannel shirt, $119; the Nike 6.0 Road Dog shirt in magenta and black looks sharp at $52; or go with legitimate work gear with a Carhartt medium-weight flannel shirt, $35.

Scarf: Somewhere along the way, a scarf became a must-have accessory for guys, which is cool. But, finding one that looks good can make the difference between being warm and stylish and being warm, and looking like Russell from Fat Albert. Think long, in fine wool or silk for both warmth and comfort. Go edgy with this French Connection Cracked scarf in black or purple, $40; the Basile cashmere scarf is an indulgence all men should consider, $98; and for that collegiate look, Smart Turnout has big, striped scarves in many US and UK university colors, $88.

Moleskin Pants: You're a chino guy for your outdoor gear, but when it's 15°F, chinos aren't an option. Welcome to the world moleskin -- heavy cotton that's meant for cool-to-cold weather. Soft to the touch but durable, they're an alternative to corduroy, with a more polished finish. Try the Ovis English Moleskin pant, $84; J.Peterman has their version of the pants available for $112; and Ibex has an "organic" moleskin pant at Sorbus for $125.

As always, BBG offers these recommendations, partnered with the rest of our seasonal suggestions, to provide the base of a well-coordinated wardrobe, with seasonal and timely pieces to keep you in style and looking sharp. Chosen well (and taking advantage of sales), you can get out of the shop for $500 or less with clothes that will last for years. Stay warm this winter.
